Women’s Basketball

Ryan DeOrio '21

Nationally ranked Bethel College used a strong second half to defeat Vassar (6-4, 2-1 Liberty League), 78-67, in the finals of the Naples Shootout December 31 in Naples, FL. Isa Peczuh ’20 scored 22 points, connecting on seven of 11 shots from the field. Vassar led 36-33 at the half, but Bethel, ranked 20th in the country, outscored the Brewers by a 26-15 margin in the third quarter.

Vassar used a balanced scoring attack and a swarming defense to defeat Castleton University, 75-38, in the first round of the Naples Shootout December 30 in Naples, FL. Peczuh led all scorers with 17 points. Jackie Cenan ’20 added 13, and Sophie Nick ’20 had 9.

Vassar used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Skidmore College, 64-42, December 11 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Peczuh finished with 12 points. Nick scored 11 and Ryan DeOrio ’21 added 10.

Defending Liberty League champion Ithaca College defeated Vassar, 69-58, December 7 at the Athletics and Fitness Center.  Cenan led the Vassar offense with 17 points.

Cenan and Nick combined for 43 points in Vassar’s 82-52 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology December 6 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Cenan scored 23 points, and Nick added 20.

Men’s Basketball

Avni Mustafaj ’23

Lehman College defeated Vassar (3-6, 0-3 Liberty League) in the finals of the CUNYAC vs. Cancer Tournament on December 29 in the Bronx. Zach Bromfeld ’21 led the Vassar offense with 20 points. 

Vassar defeated McDaniel College, 88-55, in the opening round of the CUNYAC vs. Cancer Tournament in the Bronx on December 28. Bromfeld scored 15 points and Avni Mustafaj ’23 and Zach Johnson ’23 each added 11.

Skidmore broke a 55-55 tie in the second half and went on to defeat Vassar, 74-66, December 11 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Bromfeld led all Brewers scorers with 20 points.

Ithaca College defeated Vassar, 103-80, December 7 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Mustafaj led the Brewers’ attack with 24 points.

Rochester Institute of Technology used a strong second half to defeat Vassar, 77-73, December 6 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Tigers outscored the Brewers, 49-38, in the final 20 minutes. Bromfeld led the Brewers with 19 points. Johnson added 15.

Bromfeld’s second double-double of the season wasn’t enough to prevent Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham from defeating Vassar, 79-69, December 3 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Bromfeld scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Lillian Lowenthal '23

Vassar finished fifth in an 11-team field at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational December 6, 7 and 8 at Ithaca (NY) College. The team of Jesse Ecklund ’22, Abby Whittington ’23, Sophie Forbes ’23 and Brynn Lautenbacher ’21 finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.  The team of Ecklund, Whittington, Grace Myers ’23 and Lillian Lowenthal ’23 finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Ecklund was second in the 200-yard backstroke, third in the 400-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke. Lowenthal was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, (IM), the 400-yard IM, and the 100-yard butterfly.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Vassar finished sixth in an 11-team field at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational in Ithaca, NY. Max White ’21 was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, and Jake Mier ’22 was eighth in the 400-yard individual medley.

Men’s Fencing

Graeme Mills ’20

Vassar won two of six matches at the Sacred Heart Invitational December 8 in Fairfield, CT. Graeme Mills ’20 won 11 bouts in sabre.

Women’s Fencing

Vassar defeated host Sacred Heart University but lost to five other teams at the Sacred Heart Invitational December 8 in Fairfield, CT. Rosie Parker ’22 led the Brewers with nine wins in epee.

Men’s Squash

Reece Collins '22

Vassar lost to Chatham College, 5-4, and Wesleyan University, 8-1, at the Wesleyan Round Robin December 8 in Middletown, CT. Sameer Mustafa ’23 posted the Brewers’ lone win against Wesleyan. Reese Collins ’22, Max Swan ’22, Liam Condon ’22, and Jonah Miles ’22 posted wins against Chatham.

Women’s Squash

Vassar fell to Wesleyan University, 9-0, and William Smith College, 7-1, December 7 on the Wesleyan campus in Middletown, CT. Sydney Nemphos ’20 posted Vassar’s lone victory, defeating William Smith’s Natalia Welker in straight sets, 11-3, 11-1 and 11-7.

Women’s Rugby

Molly Lynch '21

Vassar (13-2) lost hard-fought matches to Colorado School of Mines and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy December 7 and 8 at the USA Rugby Fall National Championships in Mathews, NC. The Brewers fell to Colorado School of Mines, 29-15, in the semifinals and lost to the Coast Guard Academy, 39-27, in the consolation game. Molly Lynch ’21 scored two tries in the loss to Colorado School of Mines. Lynch scored two tries, and Lexi Mousley ’20 added another in the loss to Coast Guard Academy.
