On Campus - February 2019 Preview

 

The Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre will perform selected works on February 9.

Tuesday, February 5

At 6:00 pm there will be the weekly Free for All Dinner in the Main Building Gold Parlor, sponsored by the Episcopal Church of Vassar College through the Religious and Spiritual Life and Contemplative Practices Office. The dinner is open to all Vassar students.

Wednesday, February 6

The HV Open Users Group will have their monthly meeting at 5:30 pm in Rockefeller Hall 300.

At 7:00 pm men’s volleyball will play SUNY New Paltz in the Kenyon Hall Gymnasium.

Thursday, February 7

At 12:45 pm in the College Center Multipurpose Room, the Vassar College dining staff and Bon Appetit will be providing a food demonstration for Vassar employees, focusing on superfoods to complement your meals.

At 5:30 pm Joshua Dubler, Professor of Religion, University of Rochester, and Vincent Lloyd, Associate Professor of Theology and Religious Studies, Villanova University, will give a lecture titled “Social Justice in Question.” The lecture will take place in Rockefeller Hall 200.

At 8:00 pm Ben Noble, silent-film accompanist, will perform on both the piano and organ in Skinner Hall 400, Thekla Hall.

 Friday, February 8

At 3:00 pm there will be a memorial reception to celebrate the life of Kathy Brown ’98, Director of Academic Services in the Dean of Faculty Office for 23 years, who passed away January 9. The reception will take place in the Alumnae/i House Living Room, following a 1:30 pm memorial mass at Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, NY.

At 7:00 pm the Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre will perform works selected from the current repertoire as part of Modfest. The performance will take place in the Kenyon Hall Frances Daly Fergusson Dance Theater.

Saturday, February 9

Ensemble Mik Nawooj

Men’s volleyball will play Bard, Johnson, and Wales in a tri-match at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm.

 At 1:00 pm men’s tennis will play the University of Rochester in the Walker Field House Bays.

At 12:00 pm Vanessa Sau Mui Cheung will return to Vassar to teach two Feldenkrais workshops in Studio I (Room 120) of Kenyon Hall.

At 4:00 pm there will be a panel discussion, titled “Method Sampling and a New Aesthetic,” given by Ensemble Mik Nawooj and moderated by Associate Professor Justin Patch. The panel will take place in the Skinner Hall Mary Anna Fox Martel Recital Hall.

At 8:00 pm Ensemble Mik Nawooj will give a performance in the Trolley Barn.

Sunday, February 11

At 11:00 am men’s tennis will play RIT in the Walker Field House Bays.

At 3:00 pm cellist Joshua Roman and the JACK Quartet will perform Roman’s “Tornado Quintet” in the Skinner Hall Mary Anna Fox Martel Recital Hall.

Tuesday, February 12

At 5:30 pm Ryan Luke Johns will give a lecture titled “The Valley Uncanny: Robotic Interfaces Between Nature and Design” in the Taylor Hall Auditorium (203). The event is open to the public as well as campus. At 6:00 pm Writer in Residence Jenny Offill will give a lecture in Sanders Classroom 212, Spitzer Auditorium.

Wednesday, February 13

At 5:30 there will be a screening and discussion of the film The Sign for Love in Taylor Hall 203, sponsored by the Jewish Studies Department.

Thursday, February 14

At 6:00 pm Dr. Lindsay Taylor-Guthartz will give the Fishman Seminar in Taylor Hall 203.

Friday, February 15

At 5:00 pm women’s basketball will play William Smith College in the Athletics and Fitness Center.

At 5:30 pm the Vassar Haiti Project will host "She Is!", a formal dinner dedicated to celebrating the VHP’s women partners in Haiti as well as inspiring women across the world, featuring performances from campus groups.

The men’s basketball team will play Hobart College at 7:00 pm in the Athletics and Fitness Center.

At 8:00 pm Etienne Charles, a Trinidadian trumpeter, will perform in Skinner Hall’s Mary Anna Fox Martel Recital Hall.

Saturday, February 16

At 10:00 am women’s squash will play Bard College in the Kenyon Hall Squash Courts.

Women’s basketball will play Ithaca College at 2:00 pm in the Athletics and Fitness Center, followed by the men’s basketball team, who also will play Ithaca College in the AFC at 4:00 pm.

At 8:00 pm in the Skinner Hall Mary Anna Fox Martel Recital Hall, faculty member Dr. Ashley Johnson will perform “Miss Black America,” a harp program that explores the impact of black women on the advancement and uplift of the African American community.

Sunday, February 17

Douglas Cleveland will perform a guest recital on the organ at the Skinner Hall Mary Anna Fox Martel Recital Hall at 3:00 pm.

Tuesday, February 19

At 6:00 pm there will be the weekly Free for All Dinner in the Main Building Gold Parlor, sponsored by the Episcopal Church of Vassar College through the Religious and Spiritual Life and Contemplative Practices Office. The dinner is open to all Vassar students.

At 5:30 pm the Environmental Cooperative will host “Nature in Our City” in the Environmental Cooperative Barn Multipurpose Room.

Wednesday, February 20    

Poet Zeina Azzam '77

The Turgenev Symposium will be held at 4:00 pm in the Library Class of ’51 Reading Room.

Women’s basketball will play at 5:30 pm in the Athletics and Fitness Center in the Liberty League Championships.

At 5:30 pm in Taylor Hall 203, “Interior Subjects: Portraits by Incarcerated Artists” will be held by Nicole R. Fleetwood. This talk will be sponsored by the Art Department.

At 7:00 pm “Poetry Reading from Making Mirrors: Writing/Righting by Refugees, 2018” will be held in Rockefeller Hall 200-Auditorium, featuring a number of guest poets including Gbenga Adesina, Zeina Azzam, and Sholeh Wolpe.

Friday, February 22

At 9:00 am women’s tennis will play in the Seven Sisters Championships at the Walker Field House MPR/Boxing Room.

Saturday, February 23

At 9:00 am women’s tennis will play in the Seven Sisters Championships at the Walker Field House MPR/Boxing Room, Walker Field House 231-Classroom, and the Walker Field House Bays.

Women’s basketball will play in the Liberty League Championships at 5:30 pm in the Athletics and Fitness Center 102-Fit Center Gymnasium.

The Baroque band ACRONYM, joined by faculty member Robert Osborne, will perform in the Skinner Hall Mary Anna Fox Martel Recital Hall at 8:00 pm.

Sunday, February 24

At 9:00 am women’s tennis will play in the Seven Sisters Championships at the Walker Field House MPR/Boxing Room, Walker Field House 231-Classroom, and the Walker Field House Bays.

The Vassar College and Community Wind Ensemble will perform at 3:00 pm in the Skinner Hall Mary Anna Fox Martel Recital Hall.

Women’s basketball will play at 5:30 pm in the Liberty League Championships at the Athletics and Fitness Center 102-Fit Center Gymnasium.

The men’s lacrosse team will play Montclair State University at the Prentiss Sports Complex Weinberg Turf Field at 5:00 pm. 

Thursday, February 28

The ALANA Center will be hosting a closing evening of a month of celebrating Black history and culture at 5:00 pm in the Villard Room.

At 5:00 pm in Sanders Classroom 212, Sandy Grande will be presenting the biennial Elaine Lipschutz lecture. This event will be sponsored by the Education Department and the Dean of the Faculty.
