Women’s Basketball

Vassar (8-2, 2-1 Liberty League) won the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic, defeating host Springfield College, 64-60, on Jan. 1 in Springfield, MA. Jackie Cenan ’19 scored a career-high 21 points to pace the Brewers. Vassar reached the finals with an 88-57 win over Newbury College on New Year’s Eve. Isa Peczuh ’20 led a balanced attack with 16 points. Dani Douglas ’22 had 14, and Ryan DeOrio ’21 added 13.

Sophie Nick ’20

Vassar cruised to a 70-48 victory over Liberty League rival Skidmore College Dec. 12 on the losers’ court in Saratoga Springs. Peczuh, Cenan, and Sophie Nick ’20 combined for 41 points. The Brewers limited Skidmore to just eight field goals in the first half and built a 41-20 lead.

Nick scored a career-high 31 points, leading Vassar to an 81-71 victory over Williams College Dec. 6 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Brewers trailed 26-15 early in the second quarter but fought back to take a 34-32 lead at halftime. Nick connected on 15 of 22 attempts from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds. Cenan finished with 15 points and six rebounds, and DeOrio scored 12 points.

Alex Seff ’19

Men’s Basketball

Vassar (5-5, 1-2 Liberty League) edged Utica College, 92-88, in the finals of the Utica College Basketball Classic Dec. 30 on the Utica, NY, campus. Alex Seff ’19 paced all scorers with 27 points. Paul Grinde ’19 scored 21. The Brewers defeated Anna Maria College, 78-69, in the opening round Dec. 29. Seff had 16 points, and Zach Bromfeld added 14.

Skidmore College opened a 22-point lead at halftime, and the Brewers never recovered, losing by a score of 94-54 Dec. 12 on the Skidmore campus in Saratoga Springs, NY. Grinde led all Vassar scorers with 13 points.

Seff scored 33 points, but Susquehanna University edged Vassar, 80-74, Dec. 8 on the Susquehanna campus in Selinsgrove, PA. Bromfield finished with 17 points, and Grinde contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

Women’s Fencing

Vassar (14-6) lost close matches to Sacred Heart University and New York University at the Sacred Heart Traditional Multi-Meet Dec. 2 on the Sacred Heart campus in Fairfield, CT. Mirit Rutishauser ’19 won all three of her bouts in foil against Sacred Heart and finished the day 6-9. Rose Hulsey-Vincent was 2-1 in the epee team’s win over NYU.

Men’s Fencing

Evin Heintz ’21 won 10 of 18 bouts in sabre competition Dec. 2 at the Sacred Heart Traditional Multi-Meet in Fairfield, CT. Chris Gaehde ’22 was 6-9 in foil. Vassar (16-11) lost its matches to Sacred Heart University, Harvard University, Penn State University, Princeton University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and New York University.
