Women’s Basketball

Hannah Senftleber ’14

The Brewers dropped two games in the Vegas Hoopla tournament in Las Vegas. Amherst College, ranked third in the nation, defeated Vassar, 66-53, on Dec. 28, and Gwynedd Mercy University overcame a 28-point performance from preseason All-American point guard Cydni Matsuoka ’14 to defeat Vassar, 82-74, on Dec. 30. In the game against Amherst, Vassar held a 30-29 lead early in the second half before the Lord Jeffs went on a 14-4 run and never relinquished the lead. Matsuoka led all Brewer scorers with 18 points, while forward Hannah Senftleber ’14 and guard Caitlin Drakeley ’16 finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively. In the game against Gwynedd Mercy, Vassar overcame a 12-2 deficit to take a 26-24 lead late in the first half, but the Griffins responded with a 17-5 run to take a 41-31 lead at halftime. Gwynedd Mercy hit on 13 of 21 three-point shots in the game. Senftleber added 15 points and nine rebounds for Vassar.

Senftleber scored 19 points and had 18 rebounds as Vassar defeated Montclair (N.J.) State University, the number three NCAA Division III team in the nation, 63-58, on Dec. 11 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Matsuoka sank only three of 12 shots from the field, but two of them ignited a comeback from an eight-point deficit late in the game. Vassar’s defense held the potent Red Hawk offense to 31.7 percent shooting from the field and held Montclair without a field goal for the final four minutes of the game.

Senftleber scored 23 points to lead Vassar to an 88-41 victory over St. Joseph’s College (Long Island) on Dec. 4 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. It was Vassar’s largest victory margin since Jan. 10, 2012, when the Brewers defeated Bard College by 60 points. Junior guard Allyson Pemberton scored a career-high 16 points and added seven rebounds and four steals.

Men’s Basketball

Johnny Mrlik

Sophomore guard Johnny Mrlik hit two free throws with 0.4 seconds left in the game to lift Vassar to victory in the Trinity College Holiday Tournament with a 63-62 win over Trinity on Dec. 31. Mrlik finished with a team-high 16 points. It was Vassar’s seventh victory in its first eight games of the season. Junior Alex Snyder had 14 points, and sophomore Erikson Wasyl finished with 11. The Brewers qualified for the championship game with a 60-54 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Dec. 30. Wentworth led 40-37 early in the second half when junior Luka Ladan scored on a layup, and Mrlik followed with a three-pointer to give the Brewers the lead for good. Mrlik led the Brewers with 23 points. Ladan had 13.

Vassar canned 17 of 25 shots from the field in the second half to defeat Connecticut College, 84-68, on the losers’ campus in New London, Conn., on Dec. 10. Mrlik led the Brewers with 21 points and nine rebounds. Ladan added 17 points, and Wasyl finished with 15. Senior forward Evan Carberry rounded out the balanced scoring attack with 10 points, while Snyder had a game-high 10 assists.

Ladan scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Vassar to a 63-53 victory over Drew University on Dec. 3 at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Ladan scored six points during a 24-8 spurt at the start of the game, and Vassar never trailed. Snyder also finished with 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Women’s Rugby

Senior co-captain Margaret Kwateng scored three tries and freshman Mary Margaret McElduff added two conversions as Vassar defeated Kutztown (Pa.) University, 24-15, on Dec. 8 in the consolation game of the American Collegiate Rugby Association (ACRA) Division II tournament in Auburndale, Fla. Vassar lost to Notre Dame College (Ohio) in the semifinal match on Dec. 7 by a score of 24-19. The Brewers finished the season with a record of 11-3, winning the Eastern Regional ACRA title to advance to the Final Four.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Julia Cunningham

Freshman Julia Cunningham won one event and finished second in two others to lead Vassar to a seventh-place finish in a 10-team field on Dec. 7 at the Liberty League Swimming and Diving Championships at the Union College pool in Schenectady, N.Y. Cunningham won the 400-yard individual medley and then set a school record in finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly. She took second in the 100-yard butterfly and was a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. Other members of the relay team were Maryam Pourmaleki ‘16, Lily Frye ‘16, and Elizabeth Balter ‘15.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Freshman Anthony Walker broke the Vassar record in the 200-yard butterfly on Dec. 7 to lead the Brewers to a seventh-place finish at the Liberty League Swimming and Diving Championships at the Union College pool in Schenectady, N.Y. Walker finished fourth in the event. He also swam to a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and teamed with Chris Cerutti ‘17, Dan Thompson ‘17, and Luc Amodio ’15 for a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Walker, Amodio, Patrick Lai ‘17, and Greg Cristina ’16 finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay.

Women’s Fencing

Rachel Messbauer

Facing four teams ranked in the Top 10 in the country, Vassar lost five matches in a tournament on Dec. 8 at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. In a 15-12 loss to New York University, sophomore Rachel Messbauer was undefeated in épée, and Olivia Weiss ’17 was 2-1. Freshman Elsa Stoff was 3-0 in foil, and Audrey Aller ’17 was 2-1 in sabre. The Brewers also lost to nationally ranked Harvard University, Princeton University, Temple University, and Pennsylvania State University. 

Men’s Fencing

Vassar lost matches to New York University, Harvard University, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton University, and Stevens Institute of Technology at the Sacred Heart University Tournament on Dec. 8 in Fairfield, Conn.

Co-ed Squash

Vassar split a pair of matches at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., on Dec. 8, defeating Ithaca College, 6-3, and losing to Wesleyan, 9-0. Captain and senior Kiet Phun won in straight sets in the victory over Ithaca. David Garfinkel ‘15, Carly Scher ‘17, Isabelle Bertram ‘17, Alan Darer ‘14, and Michael Iselin ’15 also won their matches.

Men’s Soccer

Junior forward Tom Wiechert, Vassar’s leading goal scorer, was named to the NCAA Division III All-East Region First Team. Wiechert scored 12 goals, starting all 18 games for the Brewers during the 2013 season. Wiechert was also named to the All-Liberty League First Team and the Liberty League All-Academic team.
