In 2006, the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, along with the Friends of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, commissioned world-renowned conceptual artist Jenny Holzer to design a 775-foot site-specific outdoor art installation entitled For Elizabeth in honor of President Frances Daly Fergusson’s 20 years as Vassar’s ninth president.
Each bench is inscribed with a quotation from the published and unpublished poetry of Elizabeth Bishop, Vassar Class of 1934, that touch upon the universal themes of love, time, nature, war, and change. These green granite benches, mined from the Laurentian Mountains in Canada, invite spectators to slow down and to enjoy a quiet moment alone or with friends.
Watch the short video “Bench Marks,” below, in which Holzer and others discuss the creation of the project.
