It bears noting that the connection between Vassar and Alumnifire is the result of networking—the very activity the platform is meant to encourage.
On the evening of Nelson Mandela’s death last December, Ken Miles '07—an Alumnae and Alumni of Vassar College (AAVC) trustee—received a message from Mera McGrew '10, a cousin of Alumnifire co-founder Andrew Margie. She had just returned to the States after working in South Africa and wondered whether Miles knew of any celebrations of Mandela’s life happening that evening.
“We ended up meeting at the Apollo and walking around Harlem late into the night, discussing Mandela and how connected the world seemed in celebrating his life,” says Miles. “Naturally the conversation moved to the Vassar alumnae/i network, and she mentioned the startup her cousin was working on.”
The following week, Miles, McGrew, and Margie all met for a conversation about Alumnifire, among other things.
“What we thought would be an hour-long meeting ended up lasting about three,” Miles recalls. “As they say, the rest is history…."
