This year marks the 40th anniversary of Title IX, landmark legislation that required educational institutions to offer equal opportunities to boys and girls. Arguably, nowhere has the impact been felt more than in athletics. Sharon Beverly, Vassar's director of athletics and physical education, talks to NPR about Title IX's impact and what more needs to be done to level the playing field.
Beverly has a long and distinguished career in athletics. She was a talented collegiate and professional basketball player, served as basketball coach for the women's teams at Queens College (her alma mater), Fairleigh Dickinson University, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and was Chairperson of the NCAA Woman of the Year Committee.
