Stocks, Bonds and Mutual Funds

Giving appreciated securities is a tax-wise way to support Vassar. For securities held longer than one year, the full fair market value of the stock may qualify for a charitable contribution income tax deduction regardless of what you originally paid for them. You also avoid paying capital gains tax on the transfer. To make a gift of securities or mutual funds please contact Dana Nalbandian in the Controller’s Office at (845) 437-5710 with the following information:

  • name of the stock
  • number of shares
  • designation of the gift
  • broker’s name and phone number

If you wish to use stock to establish a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust, please contact the Office of Gift Planning at (845) 437-5487 for special instructions.

If held with a bank or broker

Make sure they include your name or contact Dana Nalbandian at (845) 437-5710 with the details of your gift to ensure correct crediting. Instruct your bank or broker to transfer your shares electronically by DTC wire. They may need Vassar’s tax id number: 14-1338587.

If the security is not held in paper, it can be transferred to Vassar’s account with Merrill Lynch:

Brokerage Account #: 7CY-04072
Transfer Code: DTC#8862
Financial Agent: Randy O. Crane
4242 Six Forks Road, Suite 1800
Raleigh, NC 27609
(919) 829-2080
(800) 937-0634

If held by the donor

  • unsigned certificates
  • a letter stating what is being given and its designation
  • a copy of the letter with an endorsed stock power, signed but left blank (we will fill it in)

Dana Nalbandian
Box 12, Vassar College
124 Raymond Avenue
Poughkeepsie, NY 12604-0012

Please note: There is now a minimum fee of $50+ for converting physical share certificates.

If the certificate is for more shares than you wish to give

The stock power should transfer the number of shares represented by the certificate. Indicate how many shares go to the College and how many should be returned to you. Include your social security number so the certificate may be reissued in your name.
