Professor, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, 1983–2001 & 2003–present; senior vice president for worldwide policy, Pfizer, Inc., 2007–2009; assistant secretary for health, United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2002–2003; Merck Research Laboratories, 1983–2001 (joined Merck as senior director of biomedical endocrinology; later she became head of regulatory affairs, followed by vice president of clinical and regulatory development, and then senior vice president—the first woman to attain these three positions); chief of hypertension unit, Massachusetts General Hospital, 1977–1982; assistant professor of medicine, Harvard Medical School, 1977–1982; chief resident in medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, 1976 (the first woman to hold this position). She is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and was awarded the 2002 Dr. Luther Terry Award from the Public Health Service, as well as the 2003 Virginia Kneeland Frantz Distinguished Women in Medicine Award, among other awards.
